        Learn To Sail LOG IN

Spend Summer Evenings or Weekends on the Water

It doesn’t get any better than spending the summer sailing. And with our location on the idyllic Toronto Islands and our reputation as one of the friendliest clubs on the lake, there’s no better place to learn. Our participants range in age from 18 to 70, and no experience is necessary.

Both courses include:
  • Transportation from Downtown Toronto to the club, on our private tender is included for the duration of the course
  • Access to QCYC for the season and borrowing privileges for our 3 Learn to Sail dinghies

Choose from our Dinghy Sailing Course or our Keelboat Cruising Course. We also offer Private Sailing Lessons.

Learn to Sail (Dinghies)

8-lesson (weeknight) course:
Cost: $   480.00 (plus HST)

This course, which is internationally recognized by the Sail Canada standards, is designed to teach the beginner the necessary skills to act as both skipper and crew on a small dinghy. In small groups of 6 to 8 people, students learn sail theory, on-water safety and practical sailing skills from experienced and certified instructors. Graduates will receive CANSail 1 and/or CANSail 2 certification.

This 4-week course runs on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6 to 9 pm.

Learn to Sail (Keelboats)

4-lesson (weekend) course:
Cost: $   645.00 (plus HST)

This course, which is internationally recognized by Sail Canada, is designed to teach the beginner the necessary skills to act as both skipper and crew on a boat 23 to 30 feet in length, in moderate weather conditions. The total length of the course is 24 hours, of which 20 hours are on the water and the rest are spent on theory in a classroom setting. Graduates of this course will receive the Sail Canada, Basic Keelboat Cruising Standard.

Course fundamentals include:

  • Boat handling under power and sail
  • On-water and ashore instruction
  • Sailing terminology
  • Rules of the road
  • Boating safety procedures and equipment
  • Crew overboard procedures
  • Docking and anchoring
  • Weather and charts
  • Course textbook, logbook and Sail Canada Seal

Each course is 4 full days (2 Saturdays and 2 Sundays) and runs on subsequent weekends in June and July from 9:15 am to 4 pm.

Private Sailing Lessons

2-hour-lesson, up to 2 people:
Cost: $   200.00 (plus HST)

Get sailing basics or fine-tune your boat handling skills. Our certified instructors will show and teach you or two of you how to improve your sailing skills. We provide personal and customized lessons on our 14-foot dinghies. Get in touch with us at headinstructor@qcyc.ca and we will answer all your questions. Our instructors are Sail Canada qualified and can certify you through customized sailing courses.
